Luck Be a Landlord is an indie game available for Android and iOS. The idea in this game is that your landlord, who is a big jerk, keeps charging you increasing amounts of rent and the only way you can pay them is by winning cash from a slot machine.
This isn’t your typical slot machine. It’s more like a roguelike slot machine. You get to pick from a wide range of symbols to add to the machine between pulls. These symbols grant you cool abilities and powers to help you pay your landlord.
The variety of symbols available interact with each other in increasingly strange ways, all in the pursuit of earning you more money. For example, Cats can drink Milk icons, removing them from the machine but granting a big payout. Bounty Hunters can eliminate Thieves for cash and can even be upgraded to take out all human characters. Ruffians have the ability to break Urns, which then release Spirits that give you money each time they appear before eventually fading away. And the list of possibilities goes on.
What makes Luck Be a Landlord even more engaging is its introduction of levels that impose additional challenges on the player. Resources that are crucial to your strategy, such as items for removing unwanted symbols, become increasingly scarce, making your decisions all the more crucial. Just as you think you’ve mastered the system, it finds new ways to trip you up and keep you on your toes.
Luck Be a Landlord has a charming aesthetic and wry sense of humor, and this is an experience that we recommend to try. It is available on Steam and will be release for Android and iOS.
